TEAM - Together Everyone Achieve More (Some say Miracles..)

I was talking to talking to Ming jian (away in HK now) abt team.. and as i went along, i got so into the topic that i "googled" and "wikipedied" the findings...haha like doing reseach. I love seeing patterns and complexities put into short, simple words and sentences. So when i feel too disturbed by confusing stuffs, google it!!! So here it goes...

A team comprises a a group of people or animals linked in a common purpose. Teams are especially appropriate for conducting tasks that are high in complexity and have many interdependent subtasks.

A group in itself does not necessarily constitute a team. Teams normally have members with complementary skills and generate synergy through a coordinated effort which allows each member to maximize his or her strengths and minimize his or her weaknesses.

Theorist in business in the late 20th century popularized the concept of constructing teams. Differing opinions exist on the efficacy of this new management fab. Some see "team" as a four-letter word: overused and under-useful. Others see it as a panacea that finally realizes the human relations movement's desire to integrate what that movement perceives as best for workers and as best for managers. Still others believe in the effectiveness of teams, but also see them as dangerous because of the potential for exploiting workers — in that team effectiveness can rely on peer pressure and peer surveillance.

Team size, composition, and formation

Team size and composition affect the team processes and outcomes. Teams work best if sized between 5-12 members. Less than 5 members results in decreased perspectives and diminished creativity. Membership in excess of 12 results in increased conflict and greater potential of sub-groups forming. Seven members is considered to be optimal for most teams.

Regarding composition, all teams will have an element of homogeneity and heterogeneity. The more homogeneous the group, the more cohesive it will be. The more heterogeneous the group, the greater the differences in perspective and increased potential for creativity, but also the greater potential for conflict. (TOTALLY AGREE!!!!! Absolutely!!)

Team members normally have different roles, like team leader and agents. Large teams can sub-divide into sub-teams according to need.

Many teams go through a life-cycle of stages, identified by Bruce Tuckman as: forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning.

Types of Teams

Independent and Interdependent Teams

Of particular importance is the concept of different types of teams. A bright line is usually drawn between "independent" and "interdependent" teams. To continue the sports team example, a football team is clearly an interdependent team: no significant task can be accomplished without the help of essentially all team members; team members typically specialize in different tasks (running the ball, goal kicking &scrum feeding), and the success of every individual is inextricably bound to the success of the whole team. No Rugby player, no matter how talented, has ever won a game by playing alone.
On the other hand, a tennis team is a classic example of an independent team: matches are played and won by individuals or partners, every person performs basically the same actions, and whether one player wins or loses has no direct effect on the performance of the next player. If all team members each perform the same basic tasks, such as students working problems in a math class, or outside sales employees making phone calls, then it is likely an independent team. They may be able to help each other — perhaps by offering advice or practice time, by providing moral support, or by helping in the background during a busy time — but each individual's success is primarily due to each individual's own efforts. Tennis players do not win their own matches merely because the rest of their teammates did, and math students do not pass tests merely because their neighbors know how to solve the equations.
Coaching an 'interdependent" team like a football team necessarily requires a different approach from coaching an "independent" team because the costs and benefits to individual team members — and therefore the intrinsic incentives for positive team behaviors — are very different. An interdependent team benefits from getting to know the other team members socially, from developing trust in each other, and from conquering artificial challenges (such as offered in outdoors ropes courses).
Independent teams typically view these activities as unimportant, emotion-driven time wasters. They benefit from more intellectual, job-related training. The best way to start improving the functioning of an independent team is often a single question, "What does everyone need to do a better job?"

Self-managed Teams

Normally, a manager acts as the team leader and is responsible for defining the goals, methods, and functioning of the team. However, interdependencies and conflicts between different parts of an organization may not be best addressed by hierarchical models of control.

The main idea of the self-managed team is that the leader does not operate with positional authority. In a traditional management role, the manager is responsible for providing instruction, conducting communication, developing plans, giving orders, and disciplining and rewarding employees, and making decisions by virtue of his or her position. In this organizational model, the manager delegates specific responsibility and decision-making authority to the team itself, in the hope that the group will make better decisions than any individual. Neither a manager nor the team leader make independent decisions in the delegated responsibility area.

Decisions are typically made by consensus in successful self-managed teams, by voting in very large or formal teams, and by hectoring and bullying in unsuccessful teams. The team as a whole is accountable for the outcome of its decisions and actions.

Self-managed teams operate in many organizations to manage complex projects involving research, design, process improvement, and even systemic issue resolution, particularly for cross-department projects involving people of similar seniority levels. While the internal leadership style in a self-managed team is distinct from traditional leadership and operates to neutralize the issues often associated with traditional leadership models, a self-managed team still needs support from senior management to operate well.

Self-managed teams may be interdependent or independent. Of course, merely calling a group of people a self-managed team does not make them either a team or self-managed.

As a self-managed team develops successfully, more and more areas of responsibility can be delegated, and the team members can come to rely on each other in a meaningful way.

Project Teams

A team used only for a defined period of time and for a separate, concretely definable purpose, often becomes known as a project team. Managers commonly label groups of people as a "team" based on having a common function. Members of these teams might belong to different groups, but receive assignment to activities for the same project, thereby allowing outsiders to view them as a single unit. In this way, setting up a team allegedly facilitates the creation, tracking and assignment of a group of people based on the project in hand. The use of the "team" label in this instance often has no relationship to whether the employees are working as a team.

Sports Teams

A sports team is a group of people which play a sport together. Members include all players (even those who are waiting their turn to play) as well as support members such as a team manager.

Virtual Teams

A virtual team consists of members joined together electronically, with nominal in-person contact. Virtual teaming is made possible with technology tools, especially the Internet. This allows teams to be formed of players otherwise unavailable. Research can be performed using input from the best minds around the world. Work projects can be completed by spreading the workload among long-distance players. Many businesses build their competitive edge on the capabilities and efficiencies of virtual teams.

Not All Groups are Teams

Some people also use the word "team" when they mean "employees." A "sales team" is a common example of this loose or perhaps euphemistic usage, though interdependencies exist in organisations, and a sales team can be let down by poor performance on other parts of the organisation upon which sales depend, like delivery, after-sales service, etc.. However "sales staff" is a more precise description of the typical arrangement.

7 habits of highly ineffective people

I saw this book, "7 habits of highly Ineffective people" a few days ago @ Popular and thought it was quite ...a good reminder for me. haha~*

First habit: "Be reactive. Always doubt yourself and blame others."
By being reactive you don't have to take a preventive action, entertain a forethought or plan for anything in advance. You can avoid decisions forever by continuing to doubt yourself. If you don't take a decision in the first place, how can you blame yourself. This way, you also reserve the right to blame others for the inconveniences and difficulties.

Second habit: "Work without any clear end in mind."
Then whichever way it ends, look at it philosophically, "That's the way things sometimes happen. " The fact that the outcome didn't turn out to be so great is nobody's fault and certainly not yours.

Third habit: "Do only what is urgent."
You will have the satisfaction of doing the urgent thing while avoiding crises until things catch up with you.

Fourth habit: To think in win/lose terms, that is, "I should win and they should lose."
It becomes the basic orientation to all negotiations and collaborations. Sometime, this may offer you a big ego trip and when you lose, you may even get some sympathy.

Fifth habit: "Seek first to be understood."
Don't try to understand them until they understand you and that way you can be even with them.

Sixth habit: To follow the dictum, "If you can't win, compromise."
This will help you to secretly admire yourself for being so adaptable and having "one up on them."

Seventh habit: "Fear change and put off improvement."
When you spend all your energy in maintaining the status quo, many of your coworkers will become your bosom buddies.

Foster these seven habits and you shall rank very highly among the highly ineffective people.
To understand more, go to the library and get this book. haha~*

Iridology Events!~~*

Wow.. its been so long after the events then i post up the photos (On the right column)!! haha~too slow too slow..

O'right! It was amazing experience!! Dealing with old folks, professionals asking abt "What is Iridology?" etc..

Holistic Living Fair @ Fort Canning (14-15 Apr 2007)
The crowd there were all quite concerned about holistic way of living and our booth was the most attractive and attention-grabbing! It was because, we had our TV monitor facing the crowd and everyone could see Big "Flowery" Iris patterns~ and the European's eyes were amazing... Very colurful, yet flowery.. with petal-like patterns..Not a good sign... A perfectly healthy person should have a smooth, patternless iris. There is more to it, and i can't explain all here. haha~

Iridology is relatively new in Singapore, however, in the developed nations such as US, Korea, Japan, doctors are already using it as a pre-dignostic tool for their clients. It is able to pin point more accurately the parts of body which requires attention, which doctors may not be able to tell (even if they got lots of experience). Because sick pple may have tons of symptoms at one time, and misjudgment can cause alot of time delays.

For details about Iridology, you can check out a basic informational website @ www.onemillioniris.com

Econ Medicare centre & Nursing Home @ SATA (East side) (22 Jul 2007)
ECON Medicare Centre is owned by ECON Healthcare Group, having a chain of medicare centre under its name. The CEO is the father of my fellow business partner, XinDe (Now in Australia studying). We have the priviledge to promote the awareness of Iridology @ the Open house of Econ Medicare centre and we have a much different experience..

The people who went there, of course, got to know thr the mass-mailing, callings from Econ group to inform them of the event. People who came, are more aged than i tot. Mainly born in the 30s-40s, which is ard 60-70s. Wow.. it was great experience, and again, we drew the crowd. Perhaps we were strategically positioned and of course, being professional in the why we explained "What is Iridology about" and provide them with a solution.

Events management is absolutely tiring and troublesome...we were faced with scenarios that needs hugely high AQ (Adversity Quotient) to deal with...and we managed in the end. *HAPPY* ;)

Basically It was FANTASTIC!! Iridology will be the way to go, and we will achieve great credential and credibility in years to come! *CHEERS*

(*WATCH out for more Iridology events coming up!~*)

Persistency...

I'm gonna participate in Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2007!!! A public declaration that i wanna announce! (So that i can give myself no excuses..) Women's 10km run. =)
2 decisions that i have made...
1) To go for a singing competition (which i just got in the quarter finals today.)
2) Decide to go for this Standard Chartered run.

Why singing?
This is a childhood dream which i wanna fulfill. When i was in pri sch, i dare not go on stage to sing, even though i tot i have good voice quality. After getting into WBG, being the Assistant Coach in GSS Training Academy, it really gave me alot of courage and that's why i decided to do what i wanted to accomplish. This is what i have always been dreaming to do, and now, I'm DOING IT!!! Doesn't really matter whether i win or not, its the experience and courage. ;) To get into a singing contest and SHINE! (haha, i just want to earn the prize. haha~~ So i can buy more health food from WBG for my family!!!)
* I was complimented for the poise and charisma when i walked in the room and sing! ;)*

Why running?
Today was the soft launch to WBG's opening @ Adelphi Livestyle Mall @ 1 Coleman st, just opp. Funan IT Mall. Nicholas Chia flew back from Thailand SCS course, organised by GSS Training Academy, and there, he presented a gift of appreciation to our Global Crown Director (GCD) Alan Ng.

Why Alan Ng? It is because he was helping out with the company moving from Suntec city to Adelphi. He was there all the while, whole day, carrying tons of boxes, doing alot of odd jobs, wipe the windows, vacuuming the floor, etc. Everytime i see him, he will be doing cleaning ups. He really earned my respect for him.

A GCD, doing odd jobs. It reminds me of the Band days when we, the leaders, sec 4 are cleaning up the band room. No one wanted to do it, so we have to initate the movement. I really respect him alot since then. Its the company culture, corporate essence, that's a sense of ownership to what we have. I see that in Alan Ng.

Yesterday, he was giving a sharing on how he did WBG biz. At the end of the day, conclusion ended with his beliefs and mindset. He is...
- Very persistent in in work,
- Strong beliefs in WBG, HUNZA products and GSS training academy
- Clear objective why he wants to do biz ( he was a biz man before fulltime WBG networker)
- Great foresight and vision

His great persistency lead to my decision to go for the Standard Chartered marathon. I
remembered that whenever i run for my 2.4km during sec sch and JC days, when i run, what will be on my mind was "B.T Band and persist","Persist and i will achieve"...
Being at Alan Ng's sharing probed me to make this decision.
Thank you Alan!! You're the Best!! *Salutes* =)

Expectations...

Bad day today...no lunch, no luck, no happiness, alot of expectations, and expectations leads to sadness if not met.

Why expect so much?
If my expections bank too much on people, there will only be disappointments...
My heart can't withstand too much disappointments...

Expectations are demands that put pressure and stress on ourselves and on others. They are compensations and by their nature do not allow us to receive. Even if our partners are quick to do as we expect, this will not satisfy us and we can easily become bored. We have alot of Expectations that trap us by the very language we use. 'Should','have to','need to','ought to' and 'must' are all sure signs of Expectations.

To remove stress, we should change our language to 'want to' or 'choose to'. If we are aware of how Expectations push partners or prospective partners away and only lead to frustration, then we become motivated to change. All Expectations are based on need. Needs, demands and Expectations tend to alienate partners, driving them to 'need their own space' and to take time away from us.

Conclusion:
Previous conclusion was "Never find a job with people-related criteria". But i changed it. =) Don't have Expectations of people, else find disappointment and sadness at ur door step. Leave them options and freedom. Life lives better. ;)

Decision:
Previous conclusion was "Decide not to work near Paya Lebar, Geylang or Kallang area."
After PoV card reading, "Let Fate decide. And use more logical reasonings to support my job options. I may wanna work at Tanjong Pagar, likely. Must be at City area. =)".

Don't sit on the fence...

Today, after having spoken to Daniel and clearing some doubts about the Band issues..i made a decision which ended my several long days of feeling troubled and uncertainty. I decided to put a hold on to teaching Band as a career. Really thx to dan who showed me the light..

Why this decision? I have been telling the WORLD that i am happily teaching band, start on job as part time IT trainer, and working on WBG as well. But now, i choose to delay band teaching for at least 2 yrs.

I have always imagined the BEST case scenario, whereby i can earn the amount of income = where i could have made in teaching band and multimedia. These several days, about 2 weeks, i was exposed to what seems to be the worst case scenario.

1: Irregular pay. Schools are at the upper hand now. We are only providing service and .. if sch suddenly cancel practices, we wouldn't be paid that day..cannot grumble...
2: Off-peak seasons. Holidays like june and december are periods where i virtually eat grass...Income instabilty
3: POLITICS. haizZZZz...now i understand why people dun wanna work with their BEstEst friends or clique. I tot politics only happen in corporate world. Not true. it happens everywhere there are people. No matter how close we all are, where money, recognition are involved, relationships will always be strained when effective communication and understanding doesn't go well.
4: Financial instabiliy. I am not like Daniel, Kumar or Shimin, who are all debt-free(excl. monthly bills). After calculation, i will need to pay nearly $1K per month to be able to be classified "debt-free" within 2.5yrs. About $25K to pay back banks, ON COMPOUNDED interest which counts by the day...i may have already $20+ of interest within 1/2 month graduation le...Damn....why did i study for a degree and get tied up with debts....

Therefore, citing all logical reasons, i must give up my "FREEDOM" to enjoy, and take up "RESPONSIBILITY" for my life. Not just for myself, but for my parents and family as well. Time to support them too. I really loved to teach the people at Bukit Panjang Govt. High and West spring sec. The fulfillment when you teach someone who dunno how to play a musical instrument, until he/she plays with excellently, that utmost feeling of satisfaction is ....a huge sense of ACHIVEMENT and fulfillment!! When you see someone changes from a very bad attitude person, without any goals in life...and he/she grows with the spirit of the band, influence by the culture and every goodness...at the end of the day, u feel, "Wow, i can make a difference to the World". This is perhaps, what made me stayed on in WBG as well. ;) The ability to create a legacy.

Now that i have decided not to sit on the fence, made a clear decision to find a stable income job, i feel so light and happy!!! Went to deliver durians from pin's place to KL's place, do a little shopping with KL(he bought new track shoes!!!) and Gavin at causeway point...My day seems brighter and happier!! Work harder in WBG. ;) Maybe less than 2.5 yrs, i'll be free from any liabilities!! :D To be debt-free, give myself 2 years, then pursue my dreams in the Band world and WBG...

Neutralizing Challenging Situations

Recently i have taken up Band teaching as freelance (+ Multimedia IT trainer), and the things i manage, besides technical stuffs (music, theorys and stuffs), i handle people. Yes, secondary school students from West Spring and Bukit Panjang Govt. High. Although they are just young adults, what i experienced with these crowd, is like a simulation of what's happening in the real world, only "minatured". haAHAAA~* People management. Good starting point for me. ;)
Learning HOW to motivate people to do things for you while they are not paid and very willing to do everything for themselves and the organization. This is definitely an art... AHaHahaA~~*

Haven't been getting my mind on the people management too much yet, as we are focusing on improving the technical music skills of students first. We'll see how things turns out after a week or 2 and i'll start working on the people..

As i was handling some difficult people, project situation, i found a solution it!! This is one very interesting short article by my mentor, Jet, and it is about Neutralizing Challenging Situations. Its part of AQ (Adversity Quotient), whereby for example, you all still remember the Tsunami event in dec 2005? Alot of people died during in that tragedy. If countries were to moan and not react fast enough to send in the army to clear the bodies up, they would have rot and create diseases all over the region of tragic site... How people react in times of adversities.

Basically, just refer to his site. ;) Do really check it out!

POV "The Love Pack"

Wow!! Guess what's this?? It's the Psychology of Vision "The Love Pack" cards!! ahaAHAaA~~*
I swear by it...whenever i'm feeling down nowadays, it never fails to perk me up after doing some readings.. Oh yeah....This is how it looks like...so cool...Recently i had a big dispute with one of my friend, and i managed to calm myself down, reflecting on how much bad things i've done to her.. What's this all about?

"Do you feel trapped in your relationship?

Do you wonder what the future holds?

Or are you simply searching for love?"

Our romantic relationships are one of the most important areas of our lives - setting the tone for harmony, creativity, success, abundance and health. Some peopleseem to be lucky in love, but there is more to it than just luck. Whether you are single or in a long-term relationship, The Love Pack (Romance Deck) will help you to magnify your potential for love, helping you to make wiser choices, remove obstacles that hold you back, and to find lasting happiness and love.

Release the Past, Reveal your future and transform your love life

This is a picture i took after i did a Partnership Potential Reading!!! And i got these 2 cards for the section "LOVE"...wow... I'm so happy about it...because there are only 5 grace cards (The pink cards) in the deck of 84 cards! And both is in the love side...heheeHEe~~* ;) Silly girl...

The following reading is on the Important Areas Reading. This reading is designed to check out any areas you might find of interest in your present or potential relationship. I wanted to find out more about there's any possibilities between a person in my mind..There are 7 areas that i tested out on this cards... cheeky me! :P
1) Sex (hmm, that's what's in the book...not that i really wanna know abt it)
2) Truth of Relationship
3) Purpose of relationship
4) Gifts
5) Fun
6) Growth
7) Love

This is a Problem card...for Area 1.

Control = an aspect of fear showing that we do not have confidence. However, receiving this card also means we now know this problem, so we do something about it, heal ourselves. :)

Nonetheless, i got...

2) Truth of Relationship = Tenderness, the play of love that comes abt through intimacy
3) Purpose of relationship = Openness, the heart of intimacy, dropping of judgement, you receptivity
4) Gifts = Good Timing, we are going with the flow of life and that everything happens in the best possible way
5) Fun = Tryst, a romantic date filled with luscious fun and sweet delight; a meeting of lovers. Carrys high romance with a touch of mystery, and can be filled with dazzling excitement as we get to know someone in an amorous, erotic way.
6) Growth = Healing, allows us to grow, learn and improve, correcting our mistakes, which brings us closer to those ard us, generating partnership and success
7) Love = Orgasm, signifies an enthusiastic, happy celebration that leads to peace (Don't think anything too much.. :P)

Sounds hopeful to me! ahaAAHah~~** Only 1 Problem card out of so many Luck and Healing cards!! I'm so delighted!! :D

From these deck of cards and through attending PoV, i understand that..Everything happens for a reason, and knowing it, understanding and making the changes necessary, the result will definitely benefit me. ;)

Pursuit of Happyness...Part II

Today, i had Assistant Coach training, as the Emcee for the upcoming 96th SCS, held by GSS Training Academy...and today, Fanny inspired me. :) And that reminded me of a quote by Chris Gardner. Chris Jr. had a wild dream and Chris Gardner discouraged him....(i forgot what exactly happened....it was a game of basketball when they had this conversation.)

Chris Gardner told Chris Jr. :

"You got a dream, you gotta protect it. People can't do something themselves, they wanna tell you that you can't do it. You want something? Go get it. Don't ever let someone tell you, you can't do something. Not even me."

I was practising for the event, and was told by Fanny that there's this certain pitch of my voice which sounds sharp, and i was told to drop that. I fell straight to hell.... that kind of unique pitch of mine was what i find most entertaining, gets me high and energetic on the mike and, i was told to drop it. I went straight to "Lost" mode...

Fanny came up to me to find out what is wrong...and, i told her that i lost myself as an Emcee if i couldn't use what i am most proud of. She told me.. "Let no one take away your dreams...Not even me. Go get what you want! If its not the best now, YOU make it the BEST!! You'll make the BEST Emcee!!! :D"

Jia you for 96th SCS!!! :D
